Victoria University of Wellington Tongarewa Scholarships are partially funded scholarships for international students, and they are available for undergraduate and master’s studies and provide the recipient up to NZ$10,000.
Students who may be considered eligible, are those either entering their first year of an undergraduate degree or entering a postgraduate degree program at Victoria University of Wellington. They are also expected to act as Ambassadors for the Victoria University of Wellington and join in appropriate events or marketing if requested.
Scholarships are offered competitively based on academic excellence. Qualified candidates may be required to provide additional information to support their application. The beneficiaries of these scholarships are guaranteed an offer of an apartment in one of their Halls of Residence, only if the University receives an accommodation application Accommodation Wellington by their deadline.
The different levels/fields of study for this scholarship include bachelor’s degrees, Master’s by Research degrees, or Masters by Coursework degrees in any subject. They offer up to 10 scholarships of NZ$10,000 for bachelor’s and Master’s degrees and up to 9 scholarships of NZ$5,000 for master’s degrees only.
It is targeted to assist international students from all over the world. The scholarship ranges from NZ$5,000 to NZ$10,000. This is a partial fee-based scholarship that will be paid towards your tuition fees for 1 year of study.

Eligibility Criteria for Tongarewa Scholarships
Applicants must fulfill the following criteria for Victoria University of Wellington Tongarewa Scholarships:
- Required Languages: English.
- Eligible Countries: All World countries
- International students who are paying full international fees
- Entering their first year of an undergraduate degree or entering a postgraduate degree.
- Please note that you are not eligible for this scholarship if you:
- Completed your secondary education at a New Zealand school
- Completed the English for Academic Purposes (EAP) or Foundation Studies Program
- Are in your second year of study in the same degree program at Victoria University of Wellington.
- Are a Study Abroad or Twinning student from one of the overseas partner universities
Regulations and Conditions for Tongarewa Scholarships
- The Scholarship cannot be deferred to a later year.
- A completed online application must be submitted by 4:30 pm on the closing date. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted. Any required supporting documentation (including references) must also be received by 4:30 pm on the closing date for the application to be considered.
- Should the recipient withdraw from Victoria University of Wellington during the tenure of this scholarship or fail to achieve satisfactory progress, partial repayment of the Scholarship will normally be expected.
- At the discretion of the Deciding Authority, the application of the terms and conditions of the Scholarship may be modified in special circumstances or to avoid hardship to any candidate for the Scholarship.
- The Scholarship may be held in conjunction with other awards.
- Recipients are expected to act as Ambassadors for the Victoria University of Wellington and participate in appropriate events or marketing if requested.
- These scholarships are for partial fees. These scholarships will be credited to tuition fees after the final withdrawal date for the courses of the trimester the recipient(s) have been awarded for (roughly two weeks into the trimester).
Tongarewa Scholarships specific documentation
The following document will be required while filling out your online application
- Full transcripts and other documentation relevant to the qualification type
- A personal statement of up to 500 words outlining why you wish to study at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington, your academic goals, and why you merit the scholarship. You should also include any leadership positions and details of your involvement in your school or community
- An offer of place from Victoria University of Wellington (conditional or unconditional).
How to Apply for Victoria University of Wellington Tongarewa Scholarships?
To apply, you must submit a completed online application before the deadline. Applications normally open one month before the closing date.

- The trimester 2, 2024 application deadline is 1 June 2024 so you can start applying by 1 May 2024
