Allan Gray Centre for Africa Entrepreneurship (AGCAE) PhD and Masters Scholarships are now available for applications for full-time and various master’s research programs. Any interested candidate can apply for the scholarships at Stellenbosch University, South Africa.

The Allan Gray Centre for Africa Entrepreneurship is part of the School of Public Leadership, within the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences. AGCAE focuses on making use of knowledge to develop entrepreneurial variations in Africa to enhance the total well-being of communities through entrepreneurship.

Eligibility criteria for candidates who want to apply for the Allan Gray Centre for Africa Entrepreneurship

  • A candidate must meet the minimum criteria for admission to a PhD program at Stellenbosch University. This requires a master’s degree in a relevant course of choice.
  • A candidate must meet the minimum criteria for admission to a master’s program at Stellenbosch University. This requires an honors degree in a relevant discipline.
  •  The scholarships are open to South African citizens and African foreign nationals.
  • Candidates must have achieved a minimum mark of 70% aggregate in their master’s programs to be eligible for the AGCAE Doctoral Scholarships. 70% aggregate in their honors programs to be eligible for the AGCAE Master’s Scholarships.
  • Only applications in one of the AGCAE’s research themes will be considered.
  • Only Candidates who have applied for the relevant PhD and master’s programs will be shortlisted.

Scholarships benefits

  • The Doctoral Scholarship is valued at R250,000 per year for three years.
  • Masters Scholarship valued at R150 000 per year for two years.

The Allan Grey Centre for African Entrepreneurship (AGCAE) resides in the School of ​Public Leadership (SPL), within the Faculty of Economic and Management​ Sciences.

The AGCAE creates and diffuses knowledge to improve data- and dialogue-driven entrepreneurial ecosystem development in Africa and increase the well-being of communities that are entrepreneurship-driven.

Required Documents for Allan Gray Centre for Africa Entrepreneurship Scholarship

For a candidate to be eligible for this scholarship,
 the candidate must be ready to submit the following documents
  • Academic records: Full particulars of ALL previous and current tertiary studies. Please submit copies of certified diploma/degree certificates AND official study records (transcripts). Please note that academic records from student portals will not be acceptable.
  • ID or passport: A certified copy of your ID (South African) or passport (international) photo
  • Proof of competency in English: Applicants either need to provide proof that they have:
  • obtained their qualifications from tertiary institutions where English is the language of instruction or proof of English Language proficiency. This evidence must accompany your application and must not be older than 24 months from the date of application.

How to apply

  • Apply for the relevant PhD and Masters program at the Faculty of Economic & Management Sciences (EMS)’ School of Public Leadership.
  • Complete the relevant AGCAE Application Form for PhD applications or Master’s applications.
  • Ensure that you meet the eligibility criteria before you apply.
  • Be ready to write a letter motivating your suitability for the scholarship (maximum length: one A4 page), as well as a research concept note (no maximum length) on a research topic that you intend to study during your doctoral studies.

Application open to all candidates who meet the minimum criteria for admission to a master’s or PhD program at Stellenbosch University.

If you have not received a response from the Allan Gray Centre for Africa Entrepreneurship by the 30th of October 2025, your application should be considered unsuccessful.
