DeepMind Computer Science Scholarship for International Students [Fully-funded]

The Department of Computer Science at the University of Birmingham is pleased to announce two scholarships, generously funded by DeepMind, that are available to candidates who currently have an unconditional or conditional offer for the MSc Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning program at the UK Edgbaston campus.

About DeepMind Computer Science Scholarship

These scholarships will help deserving students progress as they work toward becoming employed in some of the most innovative and in-demand industries and research fields. With funding from DeepMind, the University of Birmingham is dedicated to broadening the diversity and improving access for underrepresented groups in computer science.

The scholarships will be open to students from Uganda, other East African countries, or International students from a Sub-Saharan African country.

The scholarship package will include full financial support for tuition, stipend, equipment, AI conference participation, and mentorship. International students will also be eligible for a relocation grant to move to Makerere to begin their studies.

Scholarship Benefits

The UK scholarship available is valued at £34,225. The value of the scholarship is applied against:

  • A maintenance grant of £18,985 (to use for living costs), paid in installments for the course.
  • Funding of up to £2,200 to attend an international conference in the field of  AI and/or Machine Learning during the course
  • UK tuition fees – £11,340
  • £1,700 towards the purchase of essential equipment (suitable laptop etc.)

The scholarship also covers the following:

  • Stipend to cater for living expenses
  • Medical insurance cover
  • Full payment of tuition fees
  • Equipment (laptop)
  • Travel to Makerere University for international students
  • AI conference participation and mentorship

Eligibility Criteria for DeepMind Computer Science Scholarship

Applicants are expected to meet the following conditions for DeepMind Computer Science Scholarship:

  1. Be able to demonstrate (if required) that they would not be able to take up the offer of admission without financial assistance
  2.  Applicants Identify as female
  3. Be ordinarily resident in the UK and would be classified as UK for fee-paying purposes, OR be classed as an international student for fee-paying purposes.
  4. Have already received a conditional/unconditional offer to study the MSc Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning at the University of Birmingham
  5. The scholarships are open to students who are citizens of Uganda, other East African countries, or International students from a Sub-Saharan African country.
  6. From a household with an annual income of less than £25,000

The scholarships are available for UK (Home fee status) & Overseas (International fee status) course applicants who will be undertaking one of the following courses on a full-time basis:

  1. AI for Sustainable Development (MSc)
  2. Computational Statistics and Machine Learning (MSc)
  3. Machine Learning (MSC)
  4. Data Science and Machine Learning (MSc)
  5. Robotics and Artificial Intelligence (MSc)
  6. Artificial Intelligence for Biomedicine and Healthcare (MSc)

Application Procedures for DeepMind Computer Science Scholarship

How-to-Apply: Applications can only be accepted from offer holders of the MSc Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning.

  • Once you have received an offer from the central Admissions Office, you will be sent an email with a direct application link, to apply for the DeepMind scholarship. (If you already hold an offer, you will also receive this email when applications are about to open
  • You must have applied to a relevant UCL Computer Science course (as outlined above) before applying for the scholarship separately. You will be required to provide your UCL student number as part of the application process.
  • To apply, please use this online application form and submit the Financial Information Form 2024-25. The closing date for applications is July 21, 2024. Further information will be shared directly with offer holders regarding the process.
  • Windsor Fellowship will assess and shortlist the scholarship applications based on financial need and socio-economic background. Shortlisted applicants will be invited to an interview (either in person or virtually) with the Windsor Fellowship.

About Deepmind Scholarship

The Deepmind Scholarship was established to help build a stronger and more inclusive AI community, which can bring a wider range of experiences to the fields of AI and computer science. The scholarships provide financial support to students from underrepresented groups, who are seeking graduate studies in AI-related and adjacent fields.

Scholars are also offered support from a Google DeepMind mentor and have opportunities to attend leading AI academic conferences and Google DeepMind events.

  • What financial support does the scholarship offer?

The scholarships aim to ensure that scholars receive full financial support (tuition, stipend or living costs, and a grant for necessary equipment and attendance at an academic conference). Scholars are generally supported financially for the duration of their study, from the year they join their course.

  • How are the scholars selected?

Eligible scholarship recipients are selected from the individual university’s offer-holder pool for qualifying courses; Google DeepMind does not select scholarship recipients.
