Perianesthesia nursing encompasses the care of the patient and family/significant other along the pre-anesthesia/periprocedural continuum of care:
Preanesthesia level of care
- Preadmission- Interviewing and assessment of the patient to identify potential or actual problems.
- Day of Surgery/Procedure-validate information, reinforce perioperative teaching and provide nursing care to complete preparation for the surgical experience.
Postanesthesia level of care
- Postanesthesia Phase 1 Provide nursing care immediate postanesthesia period.
- Postanesthesia Phase 2 This phase focuses on preparation for care at home.
Major Duties/ Critical Tasks:
Preanesthesia nursing role
- Conducts preoperative interview and patient teaching which includes the following: health history, confirms that the patient understands the procedure scheduled, what to do the night before surgery, that the patient must have a family member or friend with them, and that the patient cannot drive after the procedure.
- After a review of health history evaluation by anesthesia will be determined.

This role works through the full patient experience; pre-procedure, intra-procedure, medication administration, and post-procedure.
