Perianesthesia nursing encompasses the care of the patient and family/significant other along the pre-anesthesia/periprocedural continuum of care:

Preanesthesia level of care

  • Preadmission- Interviewing and assessment of the patient to identify potential or actual problems.
  • Day of Surgery/Procedure-validate information, reinforce perioperative teaching and provide nursing care to complete preparation for the surgical experience.

Postanesthesia level of care

  • Postanesthesia Phase 1 Provide nursing care immediate postanesthesia period.
  • Postanesthesia Phase 2 This phase focuses on preparation for care at home.

Major Duties/ Critical Tasks:

Preanesthesia nursing role

  • Conducts preoperative interview and patient teaching which includes the following: health history, confirms that the patient understands the procedure scheduled, what to do the night before surgery, that the patient must have a family member or friend with them, and that the patient cannot drive after the procedure.
  • After a review of health history evaluation by anesthesia will be determined.
  • Day of Surgery review health history, provide additional preoperative teaching that needs to be done assess the patient, and start IV.
  • Hand-off communication between the Pre-op nurse and OR nurse before the patient is taken to the operating room.

The bulk of duties are post-operative patient assessments

This position requires extensive experience in customer service and skill in listening to patient concerns with the ability to de-escalate and problem-solve in real-time

Wound care when necessary, and reporting any type of complication to the surgeon and management

Responsible for quality control of charting, patient experience, and quarterly drill

Responsible for assigning and managing physician peer reviews

Responsible for calling patients postoperatively to check in and assess via phone before post-op appointment

Partnering with the clinical manager in reportable incidents, managing AAAHC accreditation, patient escalation, and management of clinical staff daily duties

Required to spend at least one day a month in the operating room with the surgeon to maintain an understanding of the whole patient experience.

Charting

This role works through the full patient experience; pre-procedure, intra-procedure, medication administration, and post-procedure.

Physical Demands:

  • Use of the telephone, computer, and other related instruments or devices while communicating with patients, caregivers, physicians, and staff

  • Standing and walking for periods – this is a fast-paced center
