Applications are now open for the 2024/2025 James Cook University Scholarships for international applicants. James Cook University (JCU) offers several part-fee and full-fee scholarships every year wishing to qualify international students enrolling to study in Australia but lack the financial capability.
JCU Higher Degree by Research (HDR) Scholarships for HDR candidates (Master of Philosophy, Doctor of Philosophy) are awarded annually on a competitive basis to the most outstanding applicants. The base rate for JCU’s HDR Scholarships is currently $33,500 which is the highest of any Queensland university.

Current James Cook University Scholarships
JCU International Excellence Scholarship: For eligible students from the United States, Canada, Latin America, The United Kingdom, and Europe. The JCU International Excellence Scholarship provides a significant tuition fee reduction throughout the entire duration of approved full-degree study programs, provided recipients maintain a strong GPA each semester.
JCU Vice Chancellor’s International Student Scholarship: Available for all international students. 50% partial fee waiver, and up to a 100% fee waiver for the minimum course duration.
JCU International Student Merit Stipend: Open to students from Africa. Payments of $400 per fortnight to assist with expenses throughout the study at JCU.
JCU Research Scholarships: Highly competitive scholarships are available to students commencing research degrees at the Master’s or Doctoral level. It is open to students commencing research degrees at the Master’s or Doctoral level.
Australia Awards Scholarships: Fully funded, long-term awards administered by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade that aim to provide opportunities for people from developing countries.

How to apply for JCU Scholarship application
- All Higher Degree by Research applications should be submitted through JCU’s Online Application Portal.
- To apply for a James Cook University HDR candidature(MSc/PhD), prospective applicants must first develop a research topic and negotiate a suitable advisory panel through the Expression of Interest process.
- While submitting your application for a research degree program, you must indicate that you wish to apply for a scholarship, you will be considered for all the scholarships for which you are eligible.

- Select your HDR course
Refer to the JCU course pages to determine which Higher Degree by Research offering meets your needs. Check that you meet the entry requirements. Take note of the course code for use in your application.
- Prepare digital versions of all required documents

- Primary Advisor Statement
If you are applying for a scholarship your Primary Advisor will need to provide a supporting statement. Please send the Primary Advisor Statement link to your primary advisor.
- Apply through the JCU Online Portal
Click on ‘My Course Applications’ and follow the prompts to complete your application. Ensure that all your documents have been attached properly and that you have correctly completed every section. The JCU Graduate Research School team will be in touch if further clarification is required.
- Contact your referees
After your application has been submitted, you will need to send a Referee Reports link to your two nominated referees. They must complete this for your application to progress.

You will be asked to provide the following for your Higher Degree by Research application:
- Advisor
You can use the University’s Research Portfolio to help you find an advisor. You can also view the JCU Register of Advisors. The advisors will need to sign the completed Higher Degree by Research Application Form (DOCX, 105 KB) to confirm they are available to supervise your research.
- Project Proposal
Ensure that you have a clear understanding of what you would like to achieve, and how, before summarizing your project idea.
- Transcripts and testamurs
- Proof of your citizenship or residency in one of the following forms:
- Passport
- Birth certificate
- Visa
- Current curriculum vitae (CV)
- JCU Scholarship Publication Table (required if applying for a scholarship)
