Nnamdi Azikiwe Fellowship Award for African Students 2024/2025

The African Studies Center is pleased to welcome applications for the Nnamdi Azikiwe Fellowship Award for African Students 2024/2025. A fellowship of up to $2,000 will be awarded to support MSU international African students traveling to Africa for research.

The Award honors former Nigerian President Nnamdi Azikiwe, a scholar and politician, who led Nigeria as its first civilian president and invited MSU faculty to join him and other Nigerians to build a land-grant model university in Eastern Nigeria.

 Eligibility criteria for the Nnamdi Azikiwe Fellowship Award for African Students 2024/2025

  • The African Studies Center recognizes that international African students studying at MSU have limited opportunities to apply for grants and fellowships to conduct research in Africa – usually reserved for citizens and permanent residents of the United States. For this reason,
  • Only African undergraduate or graduate students conducting research in Africa are eligible for this fellowship.
  • Applicants must be currently enrolled in an MSU degree-granting program, and awardees must return to MSU as registered students in the semester following the award.
  • Priority will be given to students in good academic standing and with demonstrated financial need.
  • Applicants must complete any MSU requirements related to doing research abroad (IRB training for instance)
  • Fellowship recipients must write and submit a report (3 to 5 pages) to the African Studies Center within one month of their return from Africa.

Michigan State University (MSU) is a renowned public land-grant research university located in East Lansing, Michigan. It was established in 1855 as the Agricultural College of the State of Michigan, becoming the first of its kind in the United States. Subsequently, in 1863, the college was designated a land-grant institution under the Morrill Act, making it the pioneering land-grant college in the country. The university officially became coeducational in 1870 and attained university status in 1955.

Scholarship Requirements:

The African Studies Center at Michigan State University recognizes the limited opportunities for international African students studying at MSU to apply for grants and fellowships specifically designed for conducting research in Africa, typically reserved for U.S. citizens and permanent residents. Hence, the Nnamdi Azikiwe Scholarships are exclusively available to African undergraduate or graduate students researching the continent. Applicants must be currently enrolled in an MSU degree-granting program, and recipients of the award are expected to resume their studies at MSU in the semester following the award. Priority will be given to students in good academic standing and with demonstrated financial need. Additionally, applicants must complete any MSU requirements related to conducting research abroad (such as IRB training). Fellowship recipients will be required to submit a report (3 to 5 pages) to the African Studies Center within one month of their return from Africa.

Scholarship Duration and Reward:

Selection Process for the Nnamdi Azikiwe Fellowship Award for African Students 2024/2025

The fellowship program is administered by the African Studies Center. Selection of winners is determined by an African Studies Award Selection Committee with members appointed by the Center Director. The submission window is from September 1st to January 15th.
