UNU-WIDER Visiting Scholars Program 2024 | Eligibility Criteria

To be considered for the UNU-WIDER Scholarships, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Applicants must demonstrate excellent academic and research abilities.
  • Candidates working in other social sciences are welcome to apply, but they should be aware that UNU-WIDER is an institute with an economics concentration.
  • Applications from suitably qualified early-career, female, and developing country researchers are particularly encouraged.
  • Must have a good publication record.
  • Candidates should have strong quantitative or qualitative analytical abilities and speak and write English fluently.
  • The program is specifically designed for scholars nearing the end of their Ph.D.

About the UNU-WIDER Visiting Scholars Program

Visiting PhD fellows typically spend three consecutive months at UNU-WIDER before returning to their home institution. During the program, fellows prepare one or more research papers and present a seminar on their research findings. They may also have the opportunity to publish their research in the WIDER Working Paper Series.

Our Visiting PhD Fellowship Program allows registered doctoral students to utilize the resources and facilities at UNU-WIDER for their PhD dissertation or thesis research on developing economies, and to work with our researchers in areas of mutual interest.

About the UNU-WIDER Visiting Scholars Financial assistance

The program does not cover expenses related to dependents.

When the fellowship is undertaken in Helsinki, UNU-WIDER provides a travel grant to cover the costs of travel to and from the location of your PhD granting institution or country of residence, medical insurance (for medical and hospital services resulting from sickness and accident during your stay at UNU-WIDER), and a monthly stipend of EUR 2,000 to cover living expenses in Helsinki during the period of their fellowship.

Selection criteria

Applicants must be enrolled in a PhD program and have shown ability to conduct research on developing economies. Candidates working in other social sciences may apply but should keep in mind that UNU-WIDER is an economics-focused institute. Candidates should be fluent in oral and written English and possess good quantitative and/or qualitative analytical skills.

Applications from suitably qualified early-career, female, and developing country researchers are particularly encouraged. The program is especially addressed to researchers at later stages of their PhD.

Application Procedures for the UNU-WIDER Scholars Program

How-to-Apply: Interested applicants for the UNU-WIDER Scholars Program are to submit an online application and submit all the required documents on or before the application deadline.

  • Selected applicants will be informed by email of the final decision within eight weeks of the closing deadline.
  • Please note that the link to the online application form will only become active one month prior to the submission deadline (i.e., on 1 September of each year).
