The Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam Scholarship is currently available for qualified International students. Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam Masters Scholarships | DETAILS

The Semester in Amsterdam program offers one scholarship in the form of a tuition fee waiver to a prospective Semester in Amsterdam student. The VUFP scholarship covers the tuition fees. VUFP scholarship does not provide any additional allowance towards study or living costs.

The VUFP scholarship can be granted for a one or two-year Master’s program. The scholarship will only be extended for the second year of the two-year Master’s program if 100% of the credits of the first year have been achieved.

Equal Access Scholarship under Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam

The Equal Access Scholarship is offered to students from lower socioeconomic backgrounds who are not eligible for government funding and have less access to financial and educational resources. New from the Spring semester of 2025 is that students will be offered a scholarship worth €7,325 in the form of a tuition fee waiver to the winner of the Equal Access Scholarship.

Priority is given to students who face additional barriers in higher education including (but not limited to) first-generation students, students with refugee status, students with a disability, and young parents or caregivers with sole parent responsibilities.

Scholarship programs for international master’s students at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam

The are a variety of scholarship programs for international master’s students at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam for the next academic session. The scholarships include:

  • Holland Scholarship Program

The Holland Scholarship Program (HSP) is financed by the Dutch Ministry of  Education, Culture and Science, Dutch research universities, and universities of applied sciences. The scholarship amount is 5.000 EUR or 10.000 EUR for the entire duration of studies.

Students eligible for this scholarship are students from outside the European Economic Area (EEA) who are applying for the first year of a Master’s program in the Netherlands.

  • Fulbright Scholarships.

The Fulbright Center welcomes 20 to 25 students from the U.S. to the Netherlands each year through the Fulbright U.S. Student Program. The cost of the residence permit (approximately €250) will be covered as well. Tuition fees are not waived but differ per program.

The Fulbright grant will be paid in 12 monthly installments of €1,300. International travel will be reimbursed to a maximum of €1,000.

  • Orange Tulip Scholarship (OTS)

The VU Fellowship program sponsors the Orange Tulip Scholarship program. It is now possible for excellent students from India, Indonesia, Russia, South Africa, South Korea, and Vietnam to apply for this highly selective VUFP / OTS scholarship. OTS scholarship is a tuition fee waiver.

  • VU Fellowship Program (VUFP)

U Amsterdam has committed to providing approximately 1 million euros towards attracting highly motivated and excellent students. The scholarship only covers tuition fees. The VU Fellowship Program (VUFP) offers talented prospective non-EU/ EEA students the unique opportunity to pursue a Master’s degree at Vrije Universiteit  Amsterdam.

Eligibility Criteria for the scholarship programs at VU Amsterdam

While criteria may vary for the different scholarship programs at VU Amsterdam, to be considered for the VU Amsterdam Masters Scholarships, applicants are required to meet some or all of the below conditions:

  • The degree with which you are seeking admission has not been obtained in the Netherlands.
  • You hold a non-EU/ EEA passport and you are not eligible for the lower tuition fee.
  • You are conditionally or unconditionally admitted to the first year of a full-time English-taught Master’s program at Vrije Universiteit  Amsterdam.
  • You can prove your academic excellence (GPA equivalent to a Dutch 8).
  • This scholarship can only be deducted from tuition fees. To be eligible for this scholarship, you must apply to the program directly by applying here and pay the tuition fees independently.
  • You do not have the Dutch nationality.

Required Application Materials for VU Amsterdam Scholarships 

  • A personal or professional letter of reference from a person who can attest to the obstacles you have had to overcome to study abroad.
  • Curriculum vitae (CV) including contact information, work experience, education, skills, languages, and any additional relevant information.
  • Motivational Essay of 500-1000 words describing your socioeconomic circumstances and the barriers you have experienced and/or overcome to access higher education.
  • This letter should also include any relevant personal, professional, or academic goals and how you plan to use your Semester in Amsterdam to work towards these goals in order to create a positive impact in the future for yourself and your community.
