ECA Fellowship for Young African Professionals in 2024

Young African Professionals are welcome to apply for the ECA Fellowship for Young African Professionals.  ECA is the regional arm of the United Nations in Africa. CA’s dual role as a regional arm of the UN, and a part of the regional institutional landscape in Africa, positions it well to make unique contributions to member States’ efforts to address their development challenges.

This Fellowship program aims to provide practical, on-the-job experience to young professionals in their early and middle careers in the academy, international development, or international development in providing them exposure and learning in a multicultural environment of the UN and contributing to the work of ECA.

Eligibility Criteria | ECA Fellowship 2024

Candidates interested in the ECA Fellowship 2024 for Young African Professionals must meet the following conditions:

  • The candidate must have graduated before 1 July 2024 from either a master’s degree or doctorate program or equivalent;
  • The candidate must be a national of a Member State of the Economic Commission for Africa;
  • The selected candidate should participate in national, regional, or international meetings as assigned for exposure;
  • The candidate should have an interest in one or more of the identified thematic areas;
  • The candidate applying for this fellowship program must be 35 years of age or below, at the time of the application;
  • The selected candidate will work on a predefined project, designed to contribute to specific aspects of the work program of the mentoring Division, Sub-Regional Office, or ECA Centers, and contribute to other activities;
  • The selected candidate should submit and present at a seminar a peer-reviewed research paper at the end of the assignment; and
  • The selected candidate will be part of an alumni association of ECA Fellows and a member of practicing international development “community of practice”.

  5. Regional Integration; Infrastructure and Trade
  6. Gender Equality and Women Empowerment;
  7. Communication, Advocacy, Media Relations
  8. Innovation and Technology;
  9. Labor Economics and Employment
  10. Strategic Planning, Foresight Analysis, Monitoring and Evaluation, Partnership and Resource Mobilization
  11. Climate Change & Management of Natural Resources, including Green Economy;
  12. Macroeconomic policy, Development Planning, Economic Governance & Public Finance;
  13. Knowledge Management, Information Management, and Librarianship
  14. Poverty, Inequality, and Social Policy;
  15. Data and Statistics Management
  16. Organizational Behavior and Change Management
  17. Administration, Human Resources, Budget, and Financial Management

Additional Qualifications for the ECA Fellowship

  • Experience: Experience in research/analytical work in socio-economic and political development, infrastructure development, natural resource management/law, governance, regional integration, peace, and related areas in the context of Africa, either in the academia, private, public or civil society organizations, is an advantage.

Academic research or work related to the focus thematic areas is thus required.

  • Education: Advanced university degree (Master’s Degree or Doctorate or their equivalents) in economics, law, engineering, international affairs, development studies, peace and human security, political economy, political and social sciences, public administration, minerals and natural resources, business administration and related field is required.
  • Language: English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the fellowship advertised, fluency in either language is required, and working knowledge of the other is desirable. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.

ECA Fellowship Benefits

The selected Fellows will receive a one-off settling-in grant of USD 3,000 (for fellows recruited from outside of the duty station) and a monthly stipend of USD 3,000 each for the duration of the fellowship.

Special Notice

This call is open only to the Economic Commission for Africa member States nationals.

Candidates must submit their Administrative Profiles (APs) and the following documents as PDF attachments:

  • UN Administrative Profile (AP)* in PDF format, including a motivation statement (cover letter) within the AP (to be submitted as an attachment to email submission).
  • A research proposal of not less than 1,000 words (in the candidate’s preferred thematic area listed above) Candidate must indicate the thematic area of choice at the top of the research proposal document
  • Copies of all advanced-level academic degrees obtained (e.g., doctorate and master’s degree(s). As an advanced-level degree is required for the fellowship, first-level (bachelor’s) degrees and certificates should NOT be submitted
  • Copy of applicant’s national passport (information page only); if you hold multiple nationalities, the passport provided should be that of an ECA member State), and;
  • Three letters of reference/recommendation
